When buying tennis strings, there are some important things that need to be taken into consideration.
First is its playability. There are players who prefer firm strings, while others’ idea of playability is the soft and comfortable feel that the strings provide. Basically, you can consider a string as playable if it is resilient enough and immediately returns to its normal form upon impact on the ball. The string’s composition, as well as its thickness, account for the degree of its playability. Today, the most playable string you can find in the market is the natural gut, which is the only string with a natural composition (beef intestines!). Proudly, it is also the oldest tennis string manufactured and still holds the benchmark for quality and resilience.
Of course, we all want our strings to be DURABLE. However, if we focus too much on durability, the playability might be sacrificed in the process. Strings with thicker gauges and abrasion resistant materials offer more durability; however, they are not as pliant as thinner strings made of nylon. For those who break a 16 guage nylon string, it is recommended that they use a 15L version of that string instead.
STRING MATERIALS
If you’ve ever asked yourself which is better between nylon and synthetic gut, well, be confused no more. The fact of the matter is, synthetic gut is actually nylon. A lot of the performance synthetics that we can find now are composed of nylon, although of higher grade than the regular nylon string. The innovation on the present manufacturing process of nylon strings is now capable of producing strings that both value playability and durability. Back in the day, the quality of nylon string was so poor, that it did not get much attention and support from tennis enthusiasts. Now, it is a totally different thing. The quality of nylons has greatly improved, and most of the non-professional players prefer it over others.
Other materials include:
Polyester. This is a highly durable string most suitable for string beakers. It is firm, and stays in place even on impact. This material is more preferred by ATP and WTA players, but is not that popular with majority of the recreational players. It is usually combined with natural gut remains or with softer synthetic. This is what makes the polyester durable without being too hard and rigid. The combination is also more convenient to string than pure polyester. Generally, polyester strings are not suitable for beginners or those with injuries.
Natural Gut. This is probably the best choice if you’re looking for the best in playability and feel. Usually, people pay no attention to this type of string because of its price. This type of string was also the topmost choice of ATP and WTA players. Just like polyester strings, natural gut is also used in hybrids, mixing natural gut crosses with polyester. This ensures optimum control and feel, and allows for better ball pocketing. It also has a certain texture that enables the player to have more ball grab.
Kevlar. This type of string is very stiff and is the most durable one in the market. Because of its stiffness, it is normally combined with nylon. However, in spite of its durability, Kevlar hybrids are not that powerful and the least comfortable among the other types available in the market. Those who are using this kind of string are advised to decrease the tension by 10% to make up for the stiffness. Beginners and those with injuries are discouraged to use Kevlar hybrids.
