Novak Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player that is currently ranked as the fourth best player on the ATP tour. Born on May 22, 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia, Djokovic started playing tennis since he was four years old and turned pro at age 16. For 15 years, his parents Srdjan and Dijana have owned both a pizzeria and a pancake restaurant. Djokovic no doubt originated from an athletic family – his father was a professional skier, along with his aunt and uncle. Additionally, his father was also an avid soccer player. Although his father desired Djokovic to be a soccer player or skier, it was obvious that he was most talented in the field of tennis.
Djokovic often refers to his family as his motivation to do better; an existence that he would not be able to do without. He always expresses his gratitude for their continuous encouragement, support, and inspiration.
At only 20 years of age, Djokovic has thoroughly demonstrated his versatility on court as a talent to be reckoned with. In 2006, he held the 78th spot among the ranks, but his career took a turn as he proved his potential on major courts. After reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and the 4th round of Wimbledon, Djokovic jumped up to be ranked amongst the top 40. Soon after, he beat Nicolas Massu in all sets at Amersfoort, thus gaining his maiden title.
In 2007, Djokovic participated in the Masters Series at both Indian Wells and Miami, which proved to be his gateway into the upper league of tennis. These major events allowed him to progress to be ranked amongst the top ten. In the same year, Djokovic achieved his greatest feat in a Grand Slam – he reached the semi-finals of both the French Open and the Wimbledon, although he was defeated by Rafael Nadal twice.
Although Djokovic prefers to play on hard courts, he still performs well on all surfaces. In addition to his tennis skills, he can also speak three languages – English, Serbian, and German.
