The most accepted system to rate your tennis level is the National Tennis Rating Program, or the NTRP. Players are rated on a scale from 1.o to 7.0. Beginner players are from 2.0-3.0. Intermediate players fall into the 3.5-4.0 range. Tennis players above 4.5 are considered advance. To determine the level that you are at, evaluate the following characteristics and decide which one describes your level best.
1.5- You have little or no experience at all and your primary goal at this point is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent's court.
2.0- You have awkward strokes and you also lack court experience, but at this point you are familiar enough with the positions for doubles and singles play.
2.5- At this point, you are learning to predict the direction of the oncoming ball. You also are able to maintain a slow-paced rally against a player of the same level.
3.0- You are consistent at returning medium-pace shots but not at all with hard shots or long shots. If playing doubles, you are most comfortable with the one-up, one-back formation.
3.5- You have developed stroke reliability with both backhand and forehand for moderate-pace shots. You have adequate control but still do not have variety and depth.
4.0 - You are consistent with hard shots and have developed deep shots along with variety. You are comfortable with overheads, lobs, and approach shots.
4.5- You are able to execute pops and spins easily with much power and controllability. You have an accurate and powerful serve and you use this to gain control of the point. You also a footwork that works well for you.
5.0- You can anticipate each shot well and you often execute masterful shots to dominate the game point. Drop shots, lobs, volleys, and overhead smashes are executed consistently.
5.5- You are an aggressive and confident tennis player. Your shots are powerful yet very consistent. You have strategies and game plans.
6.0- 7.0- You train intensively for either junior or collegiate tournaments and have earned a national ranking.
7.0- You are a professional and you earn a living by playing tennis.
