Andy Roddick’s Serve Analysis

To see Andy Roddick serve is one thing, to see it in slow motion is another, but to try to serve like Andy Roddick is almost an impossible feat. He makes it look easy. His serve is truly glorious.

Commentator: I want point out some reasons why Andy Roddick is the best server on the planet, while we all know Andy's abbreviated back swing. This is not the explanation for its power. As he releases the tennis ball, you can see him flexing his knees beautifully and getting his body sideway to the net. But what I want you to focus on is the racquet head. Roddick gets his racquet head in and out of the back faster than anybody else. It's a quick and very fluid motion and that's why he creates so much racquet head speed in addition to his forearm pronation. Here's impact and by looking at his shirt you can clearly see how Andy uncoil forward and upward into the court, making the contact at exactly 9.5 foot off the ground. His body is completely extended, that's another massive point. When you're able to strike the ball as high off the ground as Andy, not only you make sure that you get your whole body weight into the shot but you get a better angle to force the ball hard and flat into the service box as well. By the way, Andy makes special exercises to strengthen his shoulders and arm muscles which are key for this explosive motion. By doing this, Andy's serve is as good as it gets.
